Coaching, as defined by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), is “partnering with clients in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”
People are realizing that it makes good sense to have the assistance of someone who is non-judgmental, a good listener, and capable of thinking “outside the box” to help them make their lives more manageable and enjoyable. The coaching relationship is a partnership between the coach and the client. This alliance is what makes coaching so powerful!
Unlike therapy, which typically focuses on helping clients work through issues from the past, a coach focuses on helping his client move from the present to the future, often by considering shifting energy levels. This shifting energy may allow the client to begin pondering his or her goals, and the obstacles standing between them and the vision they have of their future. It may also allow the client to see more options and, most importantly, show them they have a choice.
A coach rarely offers answers to their client. Offering solutions falls under the umbrella of consulting, where a client hires a consultant to “fix” certain problems. The consultant usually has an agenda in the relationship, but the coach has no agenda and displays a detached involvement. All coaches realize that clients are experts in their own lives and coaches are experts in the coaching process.
I have been committed to gaining a deeper understanding of the coaching process by participating in immersive training & education through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). iPEC is an accredited training program with the International Coaching Federation (ICF), which is the governing body of standards, guidelines, and ethics for coaching professionals. In early 2023, I earned my certification as a Certified Professional Coach and continue my education and elevated certifications to offer my clients the best experience and value possible.
